A Fantastic Time in 2011!!

Below are the testimonials of Brad Berg, Mike Whittlinger and Jason Winter who experienced a fantastic fishing vacation with tons of giant Walleyes being caught. Also shown are a bunch of photos from their trip.

What a great trip! The houseboat was very roomy, comfortable, and clean. It had plenty of space for sleeping 9 guys, cooking, cleaning fish, docking boats, etc. The double bathrooms are extra nice "in case of emergency..." ;) And the deck/deck chairs afforded us some incredible sunsets/moonrises before we called it a day. All appliances, generator, etc were in good working condition, and we had zero problems with any of the boat equipment -- which made is sooo easy to just fish and relax.

The fishing on this lake was the best I have ever experienced. Lac Seul is simply a tremendous, world-class fishery. We caught walleyes all day long jigging... In fact, we caught so many walleyes that it 'almost' became too easy catching them, and I kept trying to actually find lures that DIDN'T work. (I didn't find any!) Other than jigging, bouncing spinners and trolling, we got out some casting and musky gear and had at 'er most days. Especially when the wind was cranking into a reef, we usually could pull up and bang a number of mid-20" walleyes on casting gear in short order. What a thrill to have 28"-plus walleyes consistantly follow you up to the boat and/or slam big musky gear.

Our biggest walleyes for the week were a pair of 27.5" fish, although I know I had a few follow up to the boat that were decidedly larger. I have no idea how many 27's, 26's, 25's, etc that we caught (TONS), all I know is it was amazing at the size, quality, and numbers of walleyes in this system. There wasn't a spot that didn't hold fish. Literally. You would have had to work HARD to not get bit... Just amazing. We had a few occassions where we caught about a walleye per minute in a boat for very extended periods of time... The only thing that slowed us down was those "pesky" 24 and 25 inchers that kept taking longer to reel in. ;) Doubles and triples were common.

I have fished Mille Lacs, Winnie, Leech, Pool 4 (Mississippi), the great lakes, Rainy, LOW, and many others -- and walleye fishing on these "lesser" bodies of water doesn't hold a candle to what Lac Seul offered, at least in regards to quantity and quality of very solid, large fish. If you are targeting huge trophy fish of 30" and up, you might want to consider other "trophy waters" where you might have a slightly better chance at monster. But if you want to target HUGE NUMBERS of very, very quality fish, give SLFL a call and have them set you up... The action was as fantastic as the accomodations --- A trip well worth it!

I still think of Lac Seul several times a week!

The fact that you can catch fish almost anywhere in that massive body of water is amazing and awesome!!

The walleyes with the Big Shoulders, had great "fight" in them, and caught so many in that 20" - 25" was the most exciting part for me.

The landscapes are beautiful and sunsets are gorgeous!!

I can't wait to get back there!

I had never been to Lac Seul, or even Canada fishing before – the opportunity came up and am I glad I jumped on it. We had 9 guys go up for the week, we ranged in experience of 25 years fishing on Lac Seul to never having been before.

My first impression of the houseboat was “wow”. I’ve always heard of guys going to Canada and really having to rough it, and their wives complaining about how nasty their husband’s are when they get home from not being able to get themselves cleaned up. We had two bathrooms, with a full shower and hot water. Not a lot of roughing it going on for this week. Full kitchen, two sofa’s, huge table that all 9 of us could eat at together, big front porch, the whole rooftop as a place to relax for the evening, or spend some time just staring off into God’s creation in the morning.

The fishing was something that was just amazing. Having never been to Canada before, I didn’t really know what to expect. What I ended up with was something similar to a fishing dream. You had to work hard to not catch fish. We started out vertical jigging in about 18’ to 20’ of water, and within the first 2 minutes of having the line wet – BOOM! 20” walleye on the line. Literally every place we stopped (and we stopped at about 40 different places during the week) we caught fish within 60 seconds of getting the lines in the water.

By the second day, we decided to mix it up a little bit and started throwing jointed shad-raps at rock reefs and shoals. This left us in what we would call a “hay-day” of fishing. I can remember 3 casts in a row coming back to the boat with an 18”, 16”, and 21” walleye.

By day three we just got goofy with our presentations. Nothing like throwing muskie bates that are 9” long and coming back to the boat with 18” walleyes attached. I think there is a picture that we included of that presentation.

By day four we decided to long-line and bottom-bounce troll – again, success. Day four we got a bit more adventurous in our trips away from the house boat and discovered another hot spot. All I can say is look for Green Buoys and fish the heck out of them.

The rest of the days we repeated with much success. On our journey back to the dock we fished out way back, and in one spot (remember the buoys) we had 3 guys catching a fish a minute for close to an hour. An absolute dream.

Needless to say, we are already planning out next trip back to Lac Seul. Steve and his crew did an amazing job, and that made our fishing that much more enjoyable. Nothing to worry about except making sure that you took enough bait with you.
