Walleye Fishing on Lac Seul

Lac Seul is one of the top Walleye lakes in Ontario for both size and numbers. The lake itself is nutrient with high levels of dissolved calcium, which is a very important factor when determining the lake's potential for a high Walleye population and the ability for Walleyes to grow to trophy size. Combined with nutrient lake water is the English River, which supplies the lake with fresh water, which in tern keeps the acidity of the water in check. This allows weeds of many kinds to flourish and create an excellent habitat for Walleye.

Prior to 1929, Lac Seul was just a wide area of the English River. The English River itself had a good Walleye population to begin with. In 1930 when the Ear Falls Dam was finished, Lac Seul's waters started to rise and eventually engulfed smaller Walleye lakes. These isolated pockets of Walleyes were now free to spawn with the English River population thus strengthening the gene pool and producing a kind of super Walleye. That's why to this day the Walleyes in Lac Seul remain the dominant species even though there is a high population of Northern Pike and Muskie. Lac Seul also produces unusually large Trophy Walleyes. Each year Walleyes in the 20-pound range get caught. There have even been a few in recent years that were just ounces short of the world record. When a new world record Walleye is caught, there is a good chance it will come out of Lac Seul.

There are lots of factors affecting your success in Walleye fishing. Your knowledge of the lake, the weather and the amount of experience you have Walleye fishing are the main factors. Generally on an average day with a map showing the hotspots, you should catch up to 50 Walleyes in a day. There are always those awesome days when the Walleyes are feeding like crazy and you catch 5 to 10 Walleyes at every point you hit. On these days, if you work hard, you can hit the magic 100 Walleyes per day mark. We will do everything possible to get you fishing at the best places and keep you up-to-date on what baits and techniques work best at the time of your vacation.

There are also days when the pressure is dropping or it's very hot and the lake is still as glass. These are the days when Walleyes are feeding slow and sometimes will not feed at all during the middle of the day. These are the days when you should fish for Walleye in the morning and go after Muskie, Smallmouth Bass or Northern Pike during the afternoon. Anyone who fishes knows there are good days and bad days. That is easier to live with when fishing on Lac Seul because you know the lake is stuffed with Walleye and that at some point during the week you will experience unbelievable Walleye fishing. Walleyes are most common in the 1 to 3-pound range. On a good day when they are feeding well, you should pick up a few Walleyes in the 4 to 6-pound range. During the course of a week, some of our guests will bring in Walleyes between 7 and 10-pounds. Walleyes this size are not as common but a few lucky guests each week will catch them.

As we said before, there are giant trophy Walleye in the lake that can surpass 20 pounds. These giant Walleyes are always females and tend to go deep during the summer. It's rare to catch them in the shallows or off rocky points during the day or in the middle of summer. Your best chance at a big Walleye is to troll slowly long the shoreline in late evening or dark with small shallow lures that mimic minnows. Using a real minnow also works. The big trophy females will come right into 2 or three feet of water to hunt down prey.

Lac Seul is called the Walleye Capital of the World. You will find hotspots where you just don't want to leave. Being on a giant houseboat gives you that opportunity to fish the hot spots all night long without having to drive the boat back to a lodge. A Floating Lodge gives you the freedom to fish the late hours and bring in trophy Walleyes of your dreams.
