Smallmouth Bass Fishing on Lac Seul

Lac Seul has good Smallmouth Bass fishing and seems to be getting better every year. Most lakes in Northwestern Ontario have similar conditions and habitat and can grow big bass but Lac Seul is more remote and is such an unusually large lake; it produces unusually large Smallmouth Bass. Combining the structure and size of Lac Seul with the fact that the lake is constantly being fed food and fresh water from the English River, you would think Lac Seul could be called one of the Best Smallmouth Bass lakes in Canada. This is not true. Due to the high population of Northern Pike and Muskie, most Smallmouth Bass get eaten before they reach maturity, thus the population is much lower then other lakes that don't have the high quality Pike and Muskie fishing that we have.

Small Smallmouth Bass seem rare because they get eaten. Once they reach 2 pounds, their survival rate increases greatly. As a result, Lac Seul does not offer high numbers of bass but it does offer big Trophy Smallmouth Bass. Bigger Smallmouth travel in mating pairs. Generally they mate with a bass the same size so if you catch a 4 or 5-pound Smallmouth Bass, there will be another one in the same area.

Smallmouth Bass in the 4 to 6-pound range are caught in Lac Seul. The bigger Smallmouth Bass not only travel in mating pairs; they stake out territories. If you come to a nice shoal or rocky point and you do not catch anything right away, it usually means there is a really big pair in the area and they have the tenacity to chase off Walleyes and other fish. They don't always hit right away because they are very cautious, which is how they survived the gauntlet of Pike and Muskie teeth. There are 7 and even 8-pound Smallmouth Bass in Lac Seul but they are rare, which is why they are considered trophies. When you find a spot that looks great and you do not catch anything, come back an hour later and be very quiet so you don't spook them. Lac Seul is so stuffed with Walleye that it's common to hit a spot that looks great for Smallmouth Bass but the bass will not hit until you have caught the 10 to 20 Walleyes that are sharing the point or shoal with the bass.

If you want to work hard you could catch 10 to 15 good size bass in a day. That would be from spending a lot of time traveling from structure to structure. If you specifically want to catch a trophy bass, you need to sacrifice numbers and patiently fish the prime areas.

If you want Smallmouth Bass fishing to be the main focus of your vacation, then we do not recommend our lake. If you want a vacation where you can catch tons of Walleyes, Northern Pike and Muskie and still bring in some really nice Smallmouth Bass to satisfy your bass fix, then Lac Seul is the perfect lake for you.
